Clara Barton PTSA Enrichment Program - Fall 2020
The Clara Barton PTSA offers an Enrichment Program with classes that will help students to:
- Grow in new areas and learn new skills
- Connect with kids from other grades and classes
- Build community with local and national education providers
Whether learning to code, building confidence in public speaking, mastering debate skills, learning new languages, or learning to stay healthy through cooking with natural ingredients, we have a comprehensive after-school program to keep students positively engaged. We hope you find exciting, fun opportunities from PTSA for your student. Scholarships are available by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org.
Many classes are conceived to truly develop a solid learning foundation, progressing in knowledge and skills from session to session and throughout the year (i.e. Spanish with Instituto Cervantes Chicago, and coding with Little Coders). New this year, A Culinary World Tour is delivered in partnership with PCC Markets to foster and nurture a love of cooking, and doing so with healthy, nutritious ingredients.
Before registering, please note:
- All classes are virtual.
- Personal devices are required. LWSD laptops cannot be used for after-school activities.
- Most classes run 10-12 weeks compared to our traditional 6-8 week duration. This optimizes learning time during remote learning.
- We request one chaperon volunteer per activity for the full session. More details here.
Ideas and help are always welcome! Students from other schools are welcome to join the enrichment program.

PTSA Member: Virtual Chaperones
All after school classes are required for insurance to have one Clara Barton PTSA member that is a LWSD approved volunteer. The chaperone does not need to be the parent of a participating student but must be over the age of 18. If a chaperone is unavailable for a class, the class may be canceled.
All students enrolling must be able to provide one chaperone per class session for which they register. Chaperone responsibilities include:
- Being in the meeting 5 minutes prior to the meeting start time
- Taking and reporting attendance
- Providing constructive feedback to the VP of Enrichment
Free tuition is available for one student per class session that is willing to provide a PTSA member chaperone for each class period of the session. If you are interested in this primary chaperone position, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Primary chaperones will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis. The primary chaperone will need to provide the names of two additional qualifying chaperones that can take their place if unable to attend for any reason.
Families selected as the primary chaperone will register through the regular registration process, including paying tuition. Upon completion of the chaperoning obligation, the tuition will be refunded.
Financial need-based scholarships may be available upon request.

DebateAble empowers kids to find their own voices and listen to the voices of others!
DebateAble has been teaching debate to kids since 2012, both in person and online. With the school closures, our online clubs and camps have been a huge success! In addition, DebateAble has an ongoing partnership with the University of Washington offering summer camp sessions that are consistently sold out with kids returning year after year.

Cervantes Kids & Cervantes Kids Jr. - Spanish with Instituto Cervantes
The Clara Barton PTSA is proud to partner with Instituto Cervantes Chicago, a worldwide non-profit organization created by the Spanish government in 1991. Named after Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, the Cervantes Institute, is the largest organization in the world responsible for promoting the study and the teaching of Spanish language and culture.
Spanish immersion and enrichment program. Students will learn and practice their Spanish speaking skills through guided recreational play, speaking and listening activities, arts and crafts, and storytelling.
Activities will be conducted in Spanish and will be planned to correspond with school themes and holidays.
The objective of the program is to give your child the opportunity to learn and improve his/her proficiency in the language, while exposing him/her to Spanish and Latin art, culture and geography.
The program is flexible and adaptable to our students needs and requirements and we are expecting to run throughout the schoolyear.
Note: There will be two groups: one for K to grade 2 students and one for grades 3 through 5 with 10 slots only per group.
With the virtual class curriculum and partnering with the expertise that Instituto Cervantes Chicago brings, the goal is to have a language program throughout the school year for children to truly learn Spanish and progress.
