October is Disability History Month
In Washington State, 12% of students ages 3 – 18 have been identified with a disability under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). More than 23% of adults in Washington have a disability. In 2008, the Washington State legislature passed a law declaring October as Disability History Month.
On Tuesday, October 20, the LWPTSA Council Special Education group will present, “Understanding Legacy: Disability Rights History in the US,” by Eric Warwick, Defending Democracy Fellow for the Western States Center. Eric is a disability rights self-advocate and paraeducator. The presentation will discuss disability history and its implications for the present-day movement to build toward disability justice.
